Dog Tips Q&A: How do we get our dogs to balance on how many treats, too many, or not enough treats?

Published
Question from Don Evans - New York City:
How do we get our dogs to balance on how many treats, too many treats, or not enough treats?

Answer by Dr. Deb Nelson:
Treats are big issues, I hear this a lot in practice, especially when there are multiple people in the household. The biggest tip I can make on treats is to put the treats out for the day, pre-measure them, have them in a separate jar. Use actual dry dog food as a treat, because a lot of pre-made treats are not healthy, they are fats, salts, and processed with other ingredients that are not desirable. So if you choose another alternate food that is healthy and you pre-measured it, then you can decrease the dog's food amount for that day by that amount of treats, and it is not nutritionary inbalance, it's all balanced, and everybody gets the satisfaction on giving their dog a treat because if you said don't treat your dog, that will never happen. So pre-measured the treats, then everyone in the household knows that when the treat jar is empty for the day that's the end.
