Parasites are among the most common pathogens recorded in dogs. High prevalence rates are usually reported in stray and shelter dogs, as these animals are less likely to be tested and treated.

The most common external parasites we see in dogs, particularly here in United States, are fleas. Fleas are large enough that you can see them with the naked eye. They're flat and long, and they crawl through the hair coat. Roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms are all in the gastrointestinal system. And they generally get the nutrition from your dog first, and your dog gets the leftover nutrition.

As for the importance of early detection, consider fleas and ticks. Fleas can cause flea allergy dermatitis. Fleas can jump off of one animal onto another animal. They can also jump off of a dog and actually bite people. And so of course, we want to get that taken care of right away. The most important thing we do is, especially when dogs are puppies we get them on a preventative to avoid getting roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, fleas, and ticks. We can prevent all of those things by making sure that they're negative to start with and then putting them on medications to prevent them from getting those diseases.

One way to avoid ticks is not going in the areas where tall grass is because that's where the ticks are. You want to be careful that you just avoid those areas whenever ticks are out, which in US is usually during the spring, the summer, the fall, and early winter, so almost all of the months of the year in US.

• Apple cider vinegar has many benefits as a natural dewormer for dogs. It creates a more alkaline digestive system that’s less attractive to parasites. Use raw, organic, unfiltered vinegar and give ¼ to 1 tsp per day in your dog’s water or food.

• Thyme is especially useful for hookworms. In their book Herbs For Pets, herbalists Greg Tilford and Mary Wulff recommend that you use fresh or dried herbs. Add 1 tsp per pound of food.
!!!!Caution: Do not use thyme essential oil on your dog as it can be toxic. You shouldn’t use thyme in any form for pregnant or lactating dogs.

• You can use chamomile to prevent and expel roundworms and whipworms. This herb works more slowly but also helps reduce inflammation caused by the worms. Use chamomile in a glycerin tincture for worms.

• Give 0.25 to 0.5 ml per 20 pounds of body weight, twice daily. Some dogs may be allergic to chamomile so check for sensitivity before using it. To do this, apply a small amount of the tincture to your dog’s skin.
Caution: If your dog is pregnant or lactating, you shouldn’t use these herbs.

Of all of the types of worms in dogs, the most worrisome — and the most preventable — are heartworms. Mosquitoes transmit the parasite, and since avoiding mosquitoes is nearly impossible in most places, vets recommend regular heartworm preventatives to keep your #dog safe. Prevention is the best approach to dealing with heartworms. Treatment is lengthy, expensive, and can have serious side effects. To make matters worse, treating heartworm in dogs usually requires confinement and exercise restrictions. This can be hard on dogs and owners alike.

Your vet can recommend deworming medications to treat different types of intestinal parasites and heartworms, as well as preventative medications. Since puppies are susceptible to receiving #worms from their mothers, they must also have their stool tested regularly.
