Man Tried To Weigh Human Soul, Killed 15 Dogs

Published
Duncan MacDougall was a physician from from Massachusetts. He wanted to examine whether human soul has weight for which he identified 6 patients, all of them, close to death 4 of them had tuberculosis, 1 had diabetes, and 1 had unknown causes. MacDougall specifically chose these people for a reason, their conditions caused death from physical exhaustion and he wanted them to remain still as they die for accurate measure.

When the patients looked like they were close to death their entire bed was placed on a large scale. Five of the 6 patients did not loose any weight. However, one of the patient lost 21.3 grams after death. But the problem was, ground scales were not finely adjusted and the equipment was still being calibrated as the patient died. Which means 21.3 grams could be an equipment error.

MacDougall also conducted the same experiment on 15 dogs. At that time it was believed that Humans have souls, animals don't and to his surprise, none of the dog lost any weight. Only problem was, when he couldn't find any sick dogs he decided to poison 15 healthy dogs for the experiment.
