Rae the Great Dane - 3 Weeks Residential Dog Training

Published
Rae the 1 Year Old Great Dane has completed her 3 week residential training stay with us

Rae is certainly a larger than life character who has a heart of gold, but being this size a few of her behaviours have been hard to manage and scary to those who don’t know she’s a gentle giant.

When Rae arrived, she would lunge and bark at other dogs when unable to say hello. Rae has worked really hard through her stay to ensure that she can learn better manners and how to stay calm. Rae now also understands that not every dog is her friend and that passing them on lead doesn’t have to be a big event.

Rae has also been displaying very worried behaviour by backing away and barking at people. Standing out from the crowd, Rae gets approached a lot and she found this very overwhelming. We have spent lots of time showing Rae we will advocate for her and promoting her to feel like she can give consent if she wants to say hello, or disengage and ignore. This has made her much calmer around people and she will happily stay by our side without panicking as people come over to talk. We have also spent time working on this with her owners, so they can continue to show Rae she has a choice and advocate for Rae as needed

Last but not least, we have worked on Rae’s focus when out walking on the longline. Rae has now learnt how to play with us outdoors, which she adores, this has given us great value for her recall training. Rae spent her walks prior to her stay, obsessing and playing with other dogs, so changing this was crucial.
