Where some of us might find big dogs overwhelming due to their large size, the rest of us find them charming. And contrary to popular beliefs giant dog breeds actually make perfect family pets.

If you've got room in your house and on your sofa, a giant dog breed can be the perfect match for you. And this video will show you the biggest dog in the world, for you to know how much space you want to convert in your house.


Starting with the smallest on our list, we have :

10. Dogue de Bordeaux
Also known as a French Mastiff, this big dog breed is between 24-26 inches tall and has an unusual cute wrinkled appearance. The breed is considered to be a descendent of the ancient livestock guardian breed Molossus, and the Dogue de Bordeaux has had many different uses over the years.

9. Newfoundland
If you’ve heard of this giant dog breed, it is thanks to their love of swimming! Even though their name is “Newfoundland” they love the water.
They are known for being excellent lifeguards and fantastic at water sports.

8. Saint Bernard
Did you know that the Saint Bernard breeds were actually bred by a Swiss monastery? Their large size usually between 28-30 inches, meant they were perfect for defending the sacred land.

7. Leonberger
This is actually a cross between a Newfoundland, a Saint Bernard, and a Pyrenean Mountain Dog. The Leonberger looks like a big adorable fluffball. Usually around the 30-inch mark, this big dog breed is smart and strong and is mostly used for tracking and herding.

6. Caucasian Shepherd
The Caucasian Shepherd is an Eastern-European dog breed bred for protecting and herding livestock. This dog breed can be over 30 inches at the shoulder and its large size meant that it was good at protecting flocks and herds against predators in the Caucasus Mountain region.

5. Neapolitan Mastiff
The Neapolitan Mastiff is a quiet and intelligent giant dog breed that was initially bred for guarding homes in Southern Italy. They have a weird appearance with heavy, loose skin, designed to protect them in case of an attack.

4. Anatolian Shepherd
The Anatolian Shepherd is an ancient Turkish breed that goes back to around 2000 B.C.! Originally raised to protect flocks and property, and they are actually still used for that purpose today in its homeland of Turkey.

3. Irish Wolfhound
Just like the English Mastiff, the Irish Wolfhound also comes from formidable roots. In such it was previously used for wolf hunting hence the name, the Irish wolfhound was even used in wars to drag men off of horses and chariots!

2. Great Dane
When you cross the English Mastiff and the Irish Wolfhound, you get the Great Dane. It is among the tallest of dogs.

These amazing dogs stand between 27-35 inches tall and weigh about 200-230 pounds, and they are the biggest dog breeds alive today - in both height and weight. Known through history for its formidable beginnings, this breed is a descendant from ancient war dogs but now warms sofas globally and makes a loving family member.




And as a bonus, if you are wondering what the biggest dog was, it was a Great Dane called Zeus who reached a whopping 44 inches. Sadly, Zeus died in 2014 of old age, but he still remains the largest dog in the world to this day.
